In this unit, we will be discussing the idea of the environment as a public good. We will consider all of the implications that our personal and public policies have toward the health of our natural environment, and the impact that has on economics.
In class, we will be watching The Discovery Channel documentary "Green: The New Red, White, and Blue," hosted by New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman.
Discussion question: Should the United States consider changing its environmental behaviors? Why or why not?

I believe that the united states should change its environmental behaviors. The people of the united states cause many problems in our environment. They are creating unnecessary pollution and global warning.
Yes, I do believe the United States should change it's envirnmental patterns because we create most of the pollution that is causing global warming. In the video it says that over the next 50 years we will have to preserve all of the energy that we have consumed, which is over thirteen trillion watts. Carbon Monoxide is emitted throughout the world because of many industries and is changing the worlds weather patterns slowly but surely. If we cut down on how much energy we use then it could help to stop global warming
I think that we need to change the way we live. For the most part global warming is the result of our lack of knowledge or uncaring attitude leading to pollution and burning of fossil fuels. Since we have caused this, we need to try an fix it. We should start conserving energy and looking for other ways of producing it in large ammounts.
I believe 100% percent that not only the United States should change our habits, but the entire world, sure we create 1/4 of all green house gases being admitted into the atmosphere but it also has to start with other people. We need to take action now, I believe we made a huge mistake by not looking at this 10 years ago.
i believe that the united states NEEDS to change the evironment behavior because even if we do not see a result of our behaviors now, we will be presented with the problems in the future. if we do not make the necessary now, soon our species as well and many others will become extinct just like the the dinosaurs.
Question related to Richmond's post: If the United States creates a new energy policy limiting fossil fuel emmissions, or eliminating internal combustion engines, what will happen to all the classic-collectible cars out there?
They will still be used in proportions, not very often do you see those collectible cars driving around, the new alternate fuels, non-internal combusion engines will cut the car emmisions way down to where those few collectible older, american muscle cars will not make that much of a difference. It is when you have the mass numbers of cars we have now running, killing the enviornment
The United States needs to change its environmental ways if it plans on further expanding industrially and economically. Clean, green power is the only solution to the energy crisis that will fuel future industrial accomplishments. If we continue to use traditional methods of generating energy, we will only lose as it will take time and money to fix the problems this type of energy creates. By using solar, wind and water-related methods of energy generation, we can provide cleaner, cheaper energy to be used in both businesses and homes. Coming from an environmentalist standpoint, this cleaner energy will help cut greenhouse emissions and combat global warming. It will make the world a brighter, cleaner, safer place for future generations.
Yeah Sully!
Yes, the United States should consider changing its environmental behaviors because if you do then in the long run so much money will be saved, according to what they say. If a person is to change all of the light bulbs in their homes for example then after a certain number of years that family will not be paying as much. this is also true for using solar energy. even though it may cost thousands and thousands in order to convert your home into using only solar energy in the long run you will pretty much be using free energy, that is only if you are willing to pay the extremely high amount for that feature
Okay, new question folks: What alternative energy source do you believe stands the greatest chance of success in the United States? In the world?
D'Aprix thinks that if the government would take more of an active role in promoting its use, nuclear power stands the greatest chance of successfully providing for our energy needs. For cars, he doesn't see too much of an alternative.
Well we watched a video talking about the carbon produced from our houses and cars. What i ask is why we are not looking at the more dangerous exhaust gases coming from cars. Carbon is one of the most dangerous emmissions from an automobile but not necessarily the most dangerous emissions, why aren't we worrying about the other emissions coming from the autmobile. what about the nitrous oxides and hydrocarbons that kill the enviornemnt more than the carbons.
In terms of creating a clean and efficient form of energy I believe that we should turn towards converting crops into ethenal fuel. It burns clean and is easily renewable. Go figure that the easiest solution is the only one we haven't actively pursued in the US. gogo american ingenuity!
Pamela "Superstar" Kennard says that anything that we can grow--such as sugar, corn, grass--will work best. So the goal here should be to find places where we can efficiently grow energy yielding crops. So we should really like the sun--just like Superman.
i agree with richmond 110% carbon dioxide is very harmful to our environment but we also have to worry about the other pollutants coming from our vehicles. some of the carbon dioxide produced my burning air and fuel is also sent back into the cumbustion chamber to cut down on these other pollutants but we still need to cut down more. i think E-85 ethonal from corn would be the most efficient way to do this because it is more easily created and corn is more easily grown all over the world.
I believe that the United States should deffinately change thier environmental behaviors. Things should have already been done when they noticed the signs awhile ago. we really need to cut down on burning fosil fuels and find a new alternative. If nothing is done about this then our environment is going to be in great danger and wont be save for the next generations
I agree with Pamela "superstar" kennard. anything that we can grow will help limit dangerous emmissions. if we can use natrual products to reduce these emmissions why not use them. i also agree with ryan too. we should be worrying more about the pollution from our automobiles because they create a huge amount of our daily pollutions.
We should change our emissions....but will it happen...no, and as for the environment being a public good, that only goes as far as the government feels safe about their own influence over day to day life. as it were, americans are not going to change habits for any single GRADUAL reason as they feel its not that bad. the only way to make a change would be to have the govt. take total control over environmental issues and the environment in general and FORCE people to change.
